Do I need an AI key to use SPEC-R?

For AI generation features (spec generation, spec chat, screenshot analysis) yes — you bring your own Anthropic API key or use Claude Max. The editor, blocks, sharing, and MCP integration work without it.

What's the MCP server?

SPEC-R ships an MCP server that lets Claude Code (and any MCP-compatible IDE) read and write your specs directly. Your agent can list specs, read blocks, generate new specs, and update implementation progress without leaving your editor.

Can I self-host SPEC-R?

SPEC-R is open-source. You can run it on your own infrastructure with your own database. Contact us if you need help.

What happens when I hit the free tier limits?

You can continue reading and editing existing specs. To create new projects or specs beyond the limits, upgrade to Pro.
